Homage to International Non-Violence Day
It was during our topic class that one of my pupils drew my attention to the fact that the International Non-Violence Day was observed on the 2nd of October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.
Throughout this school year we shall be discussing men and women who have marked their generation and their era through their philosophies or their discoveries. We, therefore, chose to discuss this great man in history because he marked his era, the course of his motherland, India, and the world as a whole.
If we, teachers and parents, can inculcate in our children at this tender age, the love of peace and rejection of anything that has to do with hurting others, our world will be a better place. They need to learn that the use of violence is never a justification for their actions.
So with this at the back of their minds, the children of Years 4 and 5 wrote down poems of their own making. Enjoy these words of wisdom sprung from the ‘mouths of babes.’

OUR HEARTS IN PEACE
Our hearts in peace
With no disease
People die everyday
In their own ways
You! My little fellow
Do not be shallow
War doesn’t make it better
It even makes it worse
We are all the same
But with different names
Today is “Non-Violence Day”
So why not say “Yay!”
Forget about war
Keep it far away
And have some peace

PEACE
Peace means no war or violence
Even if the person harms
And humiliates you,
Can’t you forgive him or her please?
Everybody needs love and care.
Peace is for Everybody
We need love to heal the human race
Some people think war is the solution
But it is a lie
Peace is the key to everything

HAPPY NON-VIOLENCE DAY
There is a day
When people are nice
Just like mice
They eat rice
But not lice
They dance and sing
Then go home and sleep
Happy Non-Violence Day!

PEACE
Peace is like saying please in a gentle way
Peace is love, Peace is Doves
Peace is people but some don’t see it
Peace is United because we see it
Peace is the world, Peace is the sky
Peace is the big P. in my heart
Last of all Peace is my family

PEACE IS A TIME
Peace is a time when there is no war.
Peace is a time when we obey the law.
Peace is a time when we all rest.
Peace is a time when we all enjoy the best.
Peace is a time when we see flying doves.
Peace is a time when everyone loves.

GANDHI
Peace is a soul, I know
It really comes to show
We should end the war
Peace made the rich and poor.
And all because of Gandhi
The world is no longer a piece of candy
So we should show that dove
How we love
