Year 10 and 11 visit ECIGELEC University
Carlos Toe
In April, our French teacher, Madame Pelagie, organised a class trip to ECIGELEC – a university at Collège Père Aupiais. Our objective was to help the students there improve their English. Upon arriving there, Madame Pelagie and Mrs. T. divided us into pairs and each pair had to go and debate about a specific topic with one group of the university students. My partner was Abissalão. At first we were shy, but we did it. They were nice with us and I even met a new friend. This class trip was a good experience. It would be beneficial to do such a thing again in the future.

I have learned that I must be more open and more sociable, because once I will get to university, I will have difficulty making friends. Since they have invited us to their prom, I think I will be more open and make new friends, and stop being shy.
I would like to have that experience again because it was fun, even though at the beginning it was tough.
Roxane Zounmenou

I really appreciated the experience because at the end we were talking like we knew each other since. I made new friends and I was really proud of them because they did their best in English. They overcame their difficulties to talk to us and were not scared, not even to make mistakes. I think they were faithful to the fact that it’s by making mistakes that we learn. I can say that they accepted us as we did them. And then there is something Mrs. T said that kept me thinking and made me a little bit proud of myself. At a point she said, “You will be upset because you left the opportunity and it’s gone”. I was really scared; I did not want to talk, but then I did it. And this voice in my head is telling me that if I hadn’t spoken I would regret it.

I think our generation needs more people like that - people who are mature enough to take responsibility and people who are ready to make mistakes in front of strangers. All they asked for is just a correction. We need people who are not afraid of judgements and are only concerned about their own good.
