Year 10 went to Les Ateliers Coffi to see the artwork of Beninese artist, Frigg Toss
Frigg Toss uses a mix of digital art and acrylic paint to create his pieces, which are meant to invite dialogue about the balance (or lack thereof) of technology and tradition. Frigg Toss cleverly named his exhibit “Metassage” to explore this mix between reality and the metaverse.
Here are some of Yr 10’s reflections about the artwork:
Harry: Frigg Toss’s ability to mix and match acrylic paint and digital art is so perfected that I struggled to tell the difference. I feel that adds to his message; how we can lose track of reality. I felt that the artwork was very relatable to people my age, because of his use of internet terms.
Nousra: I was impressed by the symbols used; the African stools, hairstyles and plants to remember reality in a world of technology, the clocks in each painting to represent time freezing in the metaverse. The artwork made me realize how technology is slowly overtaking our daily lives. It also made me think about how people in the new generation easily get influenced, which can lead to them being someone they aren’t.
Miriam: The topic that the artwork revolved around was fascinating: social media and its effects on young Africans. In this day and age, authenticity is essential to not lose yourself.
Magnificat: The message that the artwork posed made me reflect on my use of the internet. Even though I don’t use social media, it’s still important to use the internet more mindfully.
Sacha: This trip indeed made me reflect a lot on the life we are in right now, and how so many of us are so much more invested in our virtual lives than in our real lives.
