English International School Information, 4th September 2020

Dear Parents,

Assuming that you have carefully read the Information Letters of 21st and 29th August, I proceed to focus in this letter on further aspects of in-school and at-home learning under our Hybrid model – Plan B. I take this opportunity to ask that you contact the school secretary if you are not receiving Newsletters / Information Letters in your email. Please note that they are also posted on the school website.

As of next week, you will hear from your child’s class teacher, who will inform you of your child’s group: A or B. Groups are organised, for the most part, alphabetically, with siblings placed in the same group. As we aim to keep the numbers balanced within each class, respecting the prescribed social distancing of at least 1.5 metres, we ask that you not request changes of groups to be made. Teachers will also confirm the email address which you will need to have set up for your child’s use for remote learning.

The following protocol will be observed for in-school learning:

• The school day will run from 8:00 – 2:45, with three 30-minute breaks after each 90-minute block of time.
• Children will maintain specific socially distanced seating arrangements, as assigned by class teachers.
• Contact and mixing with those outside of group will be minimised.
• Sharing of materials, food, tools, etc. will not be permitted. Pencil cases, food containers, water bottles, etc. should be labelled with your child’s name.
• Classrooms and class equipment will be cleaned / disinfected after each 90 minute block.
• Shelters will be set up which will accommodate groups of a certain number safely in the event of rain.
• Laboratory and lab equipment will be cleaned / disinfected after each use by class.
• Arrivals and dismissals will be controlled according to social distancing guidelines.
• Masks are to be worn by children and staff.
• Only E.I.S. students, teachers and staff will be permitted on school premises during the day.
• After-school activities will be suspended until further notice.

For at-home weeks or remote learning, the following should be noted:

• Learning is intended to be synchronous, therefore replicating the classroom environment. (Students will be able to hear the teacher talking and can ask questions in real time.)
• Homework will be set, correcting will be done and teachers will expect deadlines to be honoured.
• Breaks or pauses are expected to be taken along with the in-school group.
• Once children adapt to a certain rhythm, they become ‘creatures of habit.’ Structure is important and comforting.
• Establishment of discussion times with children of all ages regarding their learning, listening to reading and general sharing of what has been done remotely (as well as in school) is a priority.
• Teachers will welcome questions and feedback at proper times and through proper channels.

In our Hybrid Plan-B, we intend to make the most of face-to-face time in the classroom and prioritise essential learning for children learning remotely. We count on your fine cooperation and collaboration. The next update will address actions to be taken regarding illness at school and in the event of a confirmed COVID-19 case in the school community.
